5 Tips for Holiday Prep

We’ve helped so many clients and friends get their homes ready for the holiday season and we’ve learned a few things along the way. We really believe this can be a fun and enjoyable project! We want to set you up for success so here are a few of our best tips when you’re approaching those stacks of storage bins full of multiple years accumulation of holiday decor items…

  1. SET THE SCENE
You may be tempted to skip this tip, but I promise you something magical happens when a seasonal candle (Balsam & Cedar, Winter White or Woodfire) is lit and the holiday tunes (Fireside & Holly by Mama Watters is one of our favorites) are playing in the background. Engaging your senses of sound & smell can do wonders.

  2. PLAN
Without setting a specific day & time, the task of prepping your home for the holidays is just a nice idea. Set an appointment for yourself (write it down or put it in your calendar) and invite your family members (preferably the helpful ones!) or a few friends over to tackle holiday prep in your home. In order to be prepared, go ahead and grab the supplies you’ll likely need- consider gloves (especially if your decor contains glitter), lint rollers, batteries, command hooks, etc. Booking our holiday prep services is a great way to ensure that your space will be efficiently and carefully prepped and ready for all of the festivities ahead. If you’re looking for residential or commercial Christmas light Installation services, Christmas Decor of Knoxville is the best bet!

  3. PURGE
We will never quit preaching the message of purging. You simply can’t create order or reclaim organization in your space, unless the volume of items decreases… otherwise you’re just shuffling and re-shuffling lots of things that are not all important. Purging allows the most important items to surface, instead of drowning in the excess.

  4. GO NATURAL
The aisles full of faux greenery, florals, and seasonal foliage can be so enticing, but we’d encourage you to pass on those. Consider visiting a local greenhouse or nursery to see what fresh items they have available. If you’re in Knoxville, we recommend checking out: Pope’s Plant Farm, Farm Fresh Produce, Thress Nursery, and Stanley’s Greenhouse (don’t miss their lovely & extensive poinsettia options). Try foraging in your yard or woods near by, this is a great practice of paying attention to the world around you. One benefit to using real greenery and seasonal florals is that you don’t have to stuff them in a container to store for the other 9 months of the year. *Obviously allergies can present a challenge in this area, do what you need to keep your people sniffle free.

  5. CELEBRATE
What are the few holiday decor items that carry a cherished story or tradition for you and your family? Let these pieces be the anchor points for your holiday decor. Let those special items lead the way & set the style. Keep telling the stories and sharing the memories that those specific items represent. This year more than ever, we encourage you to bake the cookies & serve them on your favorite platter, pour punch from the fancy Christmas punch bowl, burn the seasonal candles, and let your home be a holiday haven for you & yours this season. As you clear out excess and make room for what matters, you may recognize a gap for something new and meaningful this year… we recommend visiting Back Porch Mercantile in Bearden and Roost in Maryville, to find something special.
