They can be done in a variety of ways, including using a good-old-fashioned pen and paper combo. But given how easy it is to misplace or damage a physical list, it’s recommended that you make your home inventory electronically.

There are a variety of android and iPhone and iPad apps out there that make the home inventory process easy. Not only do they allow you to take detailed notes of each item in your home, but some can even print a QR code for each item or send your information straight to your insurance company.

You can color code by room, sort by age and even take pictures of your closets and cabinets so that you always have a reference for where everything goes. Many of these apps even have scheduling capabilities so that you can get recurring reminders on when to dust, vacuum, mop or water your plants.
