More than Memories

Somewhere in the back of one of your closets or in the basement, there might be some boxes of cassette tapes, slides, and more just waiting to be taken out and remembered. The problem is, we have made so much forward progress with technology, that we might not have a way to actually listen to or watch those tapes!

Wil Davenport is the man with an answer to that exact problem while also helping you invest in yourself, friends and family with his company More than Memories (MTM). Wil works to do three things— Preserve, Create and Communicate.

Preserve- MTM will digitize and enhance old media such as home movies, slides, printed photos and documents, 8 and 16mm film reels, cassettes, records, and more.

Create- MTM also makes video slideshows for all kinds of occasions including Memorials, Anniversaries, Birthdays, Church events, Retirements, Christmas, and Easter.

Communicate- MTM also interviews people to help them communicate their values, faith, and stories to those they care for and love.

Wil is a one-man team, and works hard to “give folks back a better treasure than they started with.” Wil has several sample videos on his webpage and Facebook page that show just how much time he puts in each and every memory.

Introducing Origami Day!

I am so excited to introduce HYD's new friend, Samantha Lane, founder of Origami Day, to you. HYD is so thrilled to learn about her new company and how she's helping folks with time management and personal productivity!

Samantha came up with the idea after a health scare a few years back that led her to rethink how she was spending her own time.  Soon thereafter, she attended a time management class where the lightbulb came on and Origami Day was born.  Samantha's been applying Origami Day practices in her own life for some time now.  After walking alongside friends and colleagues assisting them with their calendars and how to use their time more wisely, she realized she had lots to offer our busy culture.  

So what is Origami Day? We'll start with the fabulous, simple, and very functional products:

Have you heard about BackRoads Market?

Earlier this week, we took an unofficial tour of one of Knoxville's newest businesses. Back Roads Market is more than just a store, it's a destination. Kerry and Craig Myers have poured tons of time and love into this beautiful space and have truly created something unique. For before and after pictures of the space, check out their latest blog entry!

The Myers' original vision was to create space for community. In our opinion, they have certainly executed that vision. They hope you find a fun item to purchase, but more than that, they hope you have a welcoming experience. Part coffee shop, part flower market, part consignment, part new furniture and decor, part custom furniture, part local goods, they have it all. 

On Saturdays, you can come build your own bouquet. Rather than purchasing a ready made floral arrangement, you get to pick each type of flower and you can make it work on any budget.

The in house carpenter, Danny, builds custom farmhouse tables and bed swings like the one below!

Behind The Scenes with KARM Thrift Stores

Have you ever come to a place where you realize you have too much stuff but have a hard time letting it go? We run into this a lot and have found that letting go of things is easier when you know your items are blessing others. Now, when we are helping with a project, we can tell you more about where your donated items are going and the needs that you are meeting simply by giving away your items to people who truly need them. We are really excited to be partnering with KARM thrift and would love to share with you a few of the ways that KARM is helping people all over our community, region, and beyond.

KARM Thrift Clearance Center

Last week we took a tour of KARM's clearance center and learned about what KARM does with items that don't sell or items that are too damaged to sell. KARM Thrift operates 17 thrift stores and the Clearance Center. The clearance center is the last stop for items that didn't sell in a thrift store, or are slightly damaged but could be fixed. Everything at the clearance center is sold at a deep discount. The Clearance Center is the general hub of all KARM thrift operations.

Caring for the community: The team at the clearance center works with a number of non profits and ministries in town to provide for people with no means. They do an incredible job of efficiently and effectively making good use of every donation possible. Below are a few of the ways KARM is giving back.

• Assist with clothing for kids entering the foster care system

• Create move in baskets for elderly individuals moving out of homelessness & into housing

• Provide clothing for babies born at Fort Sanders Hospital whose families don't have resources

• Provide household and toiletry items for people living in poverty in rural Appalachia

• Provide clothing for men coming out of prison and working with Focus Ministries.

• Invite teachers from public schools to come get free art supplies

The green side of KARM Thrift: All garments & textiles that cycle through the clearance center end up in one of 3 groups. Group A are items that didn't sell but don't have any defeciencies. They are then sold to thrift stores in cities that don't have a donation base large enough to stock a thrift store year round. Group B are items which are slightly damaged be it a stain or a tear or a missing button. These items are sent to third world countries. Some of these clothes are used as is, while others are remade into clothing to fit the appropriate culture. Group C is made up of more heavily damaged items. These are put through a compressor and sold in bales to buyers who then remove buttons and zippers to be sold and separate the clothing by color. White fabrics are cut out and sold to paint companies as rags, colored fabric is sold to auto shops and mechanics, while still others are sold and shredded to become insulation in cars.

Our New Home : The Hive

The past couple weeks have been quite a whirlwind for our little Knoxville business. For the past year and a half, we have been so grateful for the incredible clients we've met, the beautiful homes we've had the chance to work in, and the opportunities and relationships that have come our way. We've enjoyed all our meetings and markets in our 'mobile offices' all over town including KBrew, Three Rivers Market, The Smith home on Coker Ave, Remedy Coffee, The McLean home on Maplewood Dr, Old City Java, Olibea, MidMod Collective, and Nostalgia.

This week, however, we are over the moon to announce that Help You Dwell has a place to call home! It's called The Hive.

HYD now has a place to spend time preparing, planning, learning, and growing as a company. The Hive is a place for us to better serve you, our client. It's a place for us to be inspired, connected, and to collaborate with creative and innovative minds of other small business owners.

The space is in the former KnoxTenn Rental building at 854 N Central St 37917 located right next door to Magpies Bakery. (We're also pretty pumped about having them as neighbors : ) Rebecca Ridner, a local stylist of all things lovely, is the visionary of the building and has created a beautiful space for women entrepreneurs. HYD shares a studio with one of Knoxville's most talented wedding photographers, Carrie Jo Pinckard of Texture Photography. Other women currently working at The Hive are Katie Roach, florist of The Katelier, Ali Daugherty, blogger and graphic designer of Freedom Crown, and Rebecca Ridner, prop, wedding and interior stylist.

One of the aspects of this space we love the most is the common area that we all share for hosting pop-ups, workshops, or photography sessions. The light is fantastic, the atmosphere is peaceful and inviting, and the location is in one of our favorite areas of the city. We look forward to hosting our first event, which we mentioned last week, HYD's first Boutique Clothing Pop-up on August 23 from 2-5pm. We'd love to show you around a bit as you peruse Colette's Closet of top of the line clothing at consignment prices.

"Colette's Closet began two years ago as a way to honor my mom. I am blessed to be the daughter of Mary Colette Thompson Scott. She is a beautiful person with a nurturing, caring soul and loving spirit. As her only daughter, we have logged many hours of shopping together over the years. Over the past decade we have grown a special love for consignment shopping. We have so much fun "treasure shopping" for great finds at awesome prices. We have always had champagne taste on a beer budget! In February, 2013 my mom had an unexpected heart attack that resulted in a six bypass surgery. We are so blessed that she came through the surgery and recovery with flying colors. The inspiration for Colette's Closet came to me while sitting in the ICU waiting room the day after her surgery. Colette's Closet has proved to be a great avenue for spreading the love for consignment shopping and the thrill of finding designer clothing at affordable prices. Last year I had the privilege of hearing the Dalai Lama speak in Birmingham, Alabama. He told the audience that "when one has, one shares." In that spirit and in honor of my mom, I donate 10% of all proceeds to an organization that benefits women or children. Smile Train was my charity of focus last year. I am proud to support Thistle Farms this year."

Help You Dwell Pop Up Market - You're Invited!

Look for these signs (above) on Saturday! This Saturday, November 8th at 1721 Coker Ave. is Help You Dwell's first ever pop up market and we are so excited! Please come out and support local Knoxville artists and craftsmen along with Habitat for Humanity (10% of profits).

For those of you who are unfamiliar with Habitat, the Knoxville chapter has been up and running since 1985. 475 homes have been built through the organization in our city for people who find themselves unable to afford typical housing. Habitat builds homes using volunteers and home buyers, sells them at no profit, and the homes are financed with a 25-30 year, 0% interest mortgage. Habitat makes home ownership an option for people who have fallen on hard times, or who need a "hand up, not a hand out". The home owners are heavily involved in the building of their homes and pay a regular mortgage like anyone else. Check out the website to learn more about Habitat for Humanity and how to get involved in Knoxville.

Some of our vendors are set up to accept credit/debit transactions but not all of them so make sure to bring cash. We can direct you to a close ATM if needed :)

Meet Our Vendors Pt. 2

Ericka Ryba, Eric Savage, Blair Wright, and Laura Cottrell

We are less than 2 weeks away from our Holiday Market and we are blogging today to announce the rest of our vendors.

Meet Ericka! We share a booth with her at Nostalgia on McCalla and often have a really hard time not buying everything she puts in it. Ericka is one of those people who has the golden touch--we are convinced that she is good at everything. Ericka sells her handcrafted goods under the name of Providence Road. In Ericka's words about the name Providence Road, " It actually started on a real road that I lived on from ages 3 mos. to 8 years old. Almost fifteen years later, and not a very direct route, I landed in Providence, RI. I remained in Providence through my post college years, abandoned my carrer trajectory, and started working on an organic farm. Thinking this was my destiny, I moved back down South to start a farm. Well...ten years later I'm back in school studying art and letting creativity reign. I love where I've been and am excited about where I am going (wherever that may be). Providence Road to me is the culmination of everything I've learned so far about the world and about myself. "

We have had the pleasure of knowing  Eric for several years through church. Eric could do stand up or have his own sitcom if he wanted to but we are glad he hasn't left Knoxville for stardom. Eric learned carpentry from his dad and they began making furniture together a few years ago. We love the headboard he posted on instagram several months ago.

If its old, wooden and architectural, Blair loves it.  He travels to the northeast for his real job but his passion is finding and repurposing architectural salvage and vintage furniture.   He brings things home you don't see often in East Tennessee.  He cleans them up and sometimes makes new things with them.  Corbels, balusters, newel posts and more are what you'll see from White Station Architectural Finds.

We met the lovely Laura Cottrell at church and have loved getting to know her over the past year. Laura is a mommy of two and somehow still manages to find time to create all kinds of art. We are particularly excited about her recipe paintings and her fall themed banners. I shamelessly bought about 10 of her handmade ornaments last Christmas...don't judge me.

Let us introduce you to Ashley Addair and Mary Ann Watkins who are collaborating on a project of art and hand lettered words. Ashley and Mary Ann are both moms of two boys and have been part of our church community for several years. They are both extremely talented and we are loving their collaborations which celebrate some traditionally southern phrases and figures of speech. Next, we are proud to introduce a good friend of ours Rob Laliberte who owns WDWRK Co and  does beautiful woodwork in Knoxville, TN. We have collaborated with Rob in various ways and love his passion for community development and encouraging artists in our city. We share a booth at Nostalgia on McCalla with Rob and he also has a booth at the Market Square Farmers Market.

Jordan Wright has been blowing us away with his awesome new lighting business; Wright Mason Co. Currently his lights are for sale at Remedy Coffee shop and Blue Mason Coffee Shop in Knoxville TN. He uses vintage mason jars and repurposes them in one of the coolest ways we have seen yet. We are so jazzed that he will be selling his lights in our market.

We have known Daniel for several years through our church as well and have been drooling over his coffee tables ever since he started making them. Daniel owns and runs Knox Urban Homesteads and does everything from helping people start urban gardens to building chicken coops. Daniel does great work and we can't wait to share his furnishings with you all.

Finally, we are proud to announce that KBrew Coffee shop is sponsoring this event by providing coffee for all of you lucky patrons. They will also have tshirts and mugs for sale as well.

Next Thursdays blog will introduce our final four vendors.
